Introduction
T-W-M-C-L (What I think I know, Want to know, Misconception, Confirmed, Learned), chart completed by students.
Each student will write down on a sticky note what they think they know about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Then, each student with pair with another student to collaborate on what they want to know about the oil spill. Each sticky note will be placed under the T and W column on the chart. As students learn more about the oil spill, they will have the opportunity to move their sticky notes from the “What I Think I know” column to the “Misconception” or “Confirmed” column. At then end of the unit, each student will reflect on what they learned.

Overview:
Recently, there has been a tragic disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil giant BP, was drilling offshore in its rig when an explosion occurred causing oil to spill into the gulf. The oil spill took place on April 22, 2010 with 200, 000 gallons of oil pouring into the sea.

Students will complete a circle map with the words, “Oil spill in the Gulf” in the middle to take notes while watching the United Streaming video. The video is titled, “Disaster in the Gulf: A Race against Time.” The video gives a behind-the-scene look at the oil spill.


Possible Student Activities
ü Assign roles for group members
ü Discuss possible ways for oil spill clean up
ü Complete research on the internet in the lab what has worked and has not worked
ü Create a mock oil spill using materials in class to test ways to clean up the oil spill in the sea
ü Developing a plan for clean-up

Possible Projects

· Wiki with each group member having a page to tell about some aspect of the project
· Science board with pictures from each stage of the project
· Demonstration of clean-up posted on a Podcast
· Power Point showcasing the entire project from beginning to end (including digital pictures)
